10 Proven Strategies Of High Converting Websites

In our digital world, a website is the first point of contact between an organization and its potential audience. Whether you run a business, church, or blog, getting online visitors to become buyers, members, or subscribers is a big challenge. With countless websites vying for attention and the average user spending just seconds on a page, mastering conversion is central to success. But what exactly does that mean?

What is Website Conversion?

Guiding website visitors to take desired actions is known as conversion. This process turns visitors into customers, members, subscribers, or leads.

Conversions can take many forms depending on the goals of your website. For an e-commerce site, a conversion might be a completed purchase. For a church, it could be a visitor planning a visit or registering for an event. For a food blog, it might be a reader subscribing to updates. For a construction company, it could be a potential client filling out a contact form.

Essentially, a conversion is any desired action that moves a visitor closer to becoming a committed participant in what you offer.

What Is a Good Conversion Rate?

Conversion rates vary significantly across different types of websites, but as a general benchmark, a decent conversion rate is typically between 2% to 5%. Top-performing websites often achieve conversion rates of 10% or higher. This means that out of every 100 visitors, at least 2 to 5 (or ideally 10 or more) complete the desired action. Understanding and aiming for these benchmarks can help you set realistic goals for your website’s performance.

Note From Marc: A bad conversation rate is often a sign that your website’s design and structure is not good. I created a checklist to help you prepare your website for website visitors. You can download it over on my free resources page.

The Challenge of Capturing Attention

Attention has become a scarce and precious commodity online. On average, people spend only 54 seconds on a webpage. This means you have less than a minute to capture a visitor’s attention, convey your message, and persuade them to take action. How do you ensure that users stay long enough to convert?

The Key to Survival: Conversion

On the internet, where countless websites compete for user attention, conversion is the key to success. Without effective conversion strategies, even the most beautifully designed website can fail to achieve its goals. High-converting websites are not just about aesthetics; they are about creating an experience that guides visitors towards taking the desired action.

The Professional Touch

Creating a high-converting website involves understanding and implementing various design and marketing principles. As a professional website designer, I can make a significant difference for your project. I not only bring your vision to life but also ensure that your website is optimized for conversions from the ground up.

Let’s dive into the key elements that drive conversions and explore how I can help you achieve them.

1. User-Centric Design

High-converting websites prioritize the user experience (UX in the website design world). This means creating a website that is easy to navigate, visually appealing, and responsive on all devices. A cluttered or confusing layout can drive visitors away. A professional website designer understands how to balance aesthetics with functionality to ensure that your visitors have a seamless experience.

Key Aspects of User-Centric Design:

  • Intuitive Navigation: Ensure users can easily find what they need with clear and logical menus.
  • Responsive Design: Optimize for all devices, including desktops, tablets, and smartphones.
  • Fast Loading Times: Reduce load times to keep users engaged and prevent them from leaving.

Even though many people still use computers and laptops, phones are becoming the main way people surf the web. Even though many designers design a great desktop experience, a great designer will also design a great mobile experience. Here’s a recent mobile menu design that I created for a local church to help website visitors find the most important pages as fast as possible.

2. Compelling and Relevant Content

Content is king, and high-converting websites know how to leverage it effectively. This includes not only the text on your site but also images, videos, and other multimedia elements. Your content should be engaging, informative, and tailored to your target audience.

Tips for Compelling Content:

  • Clear Messaging: Communicate your value proposition and benefits clearly and concisely.
  • High-Quality Visuals: Use professional images, videos, and graphics to attract and retain visitors.
  • SEO Optimization: Ensure content is optimized for search engines to increase visibility and attract organic traffic.

3. Strong Call-to-Action (CTA)

A strong, clear call-to-action is essential for converting visitors into customers. Your CTAs should stand out and guide users towards the desired action, whether it’s making a purchase, signing up for a newsletter, or contacting you for more information.

Effective CTA Strategies:

  • Prominent Placement: Position CTAs where users can easily see and access them, typically above the fold.
  • Design and Contrast: Use contrasting colors and compelling text to make CTAs stand out.
  • Clarity and Specificity: Clearly state what action you want users to take and what they will get in return.

Here’s an example of how you can use CTAs to get users to interact with your website. Once you decide where you want people to go on your website, you can use buttons in the first section to help them get to where they need to go. Here’s how we accomplished this with Farm Innovators:

4. Trust and Credibility

Building trust with your visitors is crucial for conversions. High-converting websites include elements that establish credibility and reassure potential customers that your business is reliable and professional. I mean, think about Amazon. How many products have you purchased without reading the reviews? The same goes with your services. Why would people want to work with you if you have zero people backing up what you say?

How to Building Trust With Your Website:

  • Testimonials and Reviews: Showcase positive feedback from customers to build trust.
  • Security Badges: Display security seals to reassure users about the safety of their data.
  • Professional Design: A polished and professional-looking website fosters credibility and trust.

5. Data-Driven Optimization

Successful websites continuously analyze performance and make data-driven decisions to optimize conversions. This involves using analytics tools to track user behavior, identify areas for improvement, and test different strategies.

Tools and Techniques:

  • Analytics Tools: Use tools like Google Analytics or AnalyticsWP (my tool of choice) to track user behavior and key performance metrics.
  • A/B Testing: Experiment with different versions of pages and elements to see what works best.
  • Heatmaps: Visualize user interactions to understand what attracts attention and what doesn’t. In fact, I recently started using Microsoft Clarity on my own website, and I love it!

6. Simplified Checkout Process (for e-commerce sites)

For e-commerce sites, a simplified and secure checkout process is critical. High-converting websites minimize friction and make it easy for customers to complete their purchases.

Optimizing Checkout:

  • Guest Checkout: Allow users to purchase without creating an account.
  • Multiple Payment Options: Offer various payment methods to cater to different preferences.
  • Progress Indicators: Show users their progress during checkout to reduce uncertainty and abandonment.
  • Express Payment: Many people don’t have a credit card on hand, but you know what they do have? PayPal, Apple Pay, Google Pay, etc. If you want to convert more sales, offer faster ways to pay.

7. Social Proof and Community Engagement

High-converting websites leverage social proof to build trust and encourage conversions. This includes integrating social media, showcasing user-generated content, and highlighting community engagement.

Utilizing Social Proof:

  • Social Media Integration: Incorporate social media feeds and share buttons to encourage engagement.
  • User-Generated Content: Highlight content created by customers, such as reviews and photos.
  • Community Building: Foster a sense of community around your brand through forums, comments, groups, and events.

8. Consistent Branding

Maintaining a cohesive brand identity across your website is crucial. This involves using consistent colors, fonts, imagery, and text to reflect your brand’s personality and values. These elements collectively strengthen brand recognition and trust, fostering a deeper connection with your audience.

Consistent Branding Elements:

  • Visual Consistency: Use consistent colors, fonts, and imagery that align with your brand identity.
  • Voice and Tone: Maintain a consistent voice and tone across all content to build a cohesive brand experience.

Hubspot released an article and mentioned that “94% of first impressions related to your site’s web design.” What does this mean? If your website looks cheap and poorly designed, people won’t trust you and will more than likely work with your competitor.

9. Clear Value Proposition

A clear value proposition communicates to visitors what sets your product or service apart from the competition and why they should choose you. In the brief moments users spend on your site, they need to quickly understand the benefits of engaging with you. Compel your audience that you’re worth their time and money by addressing their pain points and demonstrating your unique selling points.

Writing Value Propositions:

  • Highlight Benefits: Clearly state the benefits and value of your product or service.
  • Unique Selling Points (USPs): Emphasize what sets you apart from competitors.
  • The Audience: Inform visitors who you work with. This way they can quickly determine if you can serve them.
  • So What?: My favorite method of writing a value proposition statement is finishing with “so what?” If someone works with you, what results will they experience?

10. Simple and Clean Layout

When visitors land on your website, they should be able to quickly and intuitively find the information they need without distractions. A clutter-free design reduces cognitive load, allowing users to focus on your core message and calls-to-action. Moreover, a streamlined layout improves visual appeal and professionalism, instilling confidence in your brand.

Clean Layout Tips:

  • Minimalist Design: Avoid clutter and focus on simplicity to improve user experience.
  • Whitespace: Use whitespace effectively to guide users’ attention and make content more digestible.

By focusing on these 10 key principles, we can design a website that not only attracts visitors but also converts them into loyal customers.
