Not too long ago, a client reached out to me with a really common question:
“What can I do to get my website found and actually get more traffic to it?”
It’s a good question — and one I love answering because there are so many strategies that can work. The trick is choosing the right mix based on your goals, budget, and audience.
I ended up sending them a list of practical ideas they could start trying right away. And as I looked back at what I wrote, I realized it might make a great blog post for anyone else wondering the same thing. So, here we are!
Let’s walk through the six strategies I shared — with a little extra detail, context, and some insider perspective sprinkled in.
1. Local Facebook Groups: The Budget-Friendly Option
When people think of online advertising, they often jump straight to Google Ads or boosted posts. But sometimes, the cheapest and most effective place to start is right in your own community.
For example, there’s a local Facebook group near me called Michiana Small Business. For about $30 per month, businesses can post once a day. That’s insanely affordable compared to most other platforms.
Here’s the deal though: it’s not guaranteed results. You’re not paying for clicks or calls — you’re paying for visibility. Think of it more as brand recognition. People in your area see your name again and again, and when they finally need your service, they’ll remember you.
If you’re looking for a low-cost way to test the waters, this is a great place to start.
2. Yard Signs and Door Hangers: Old-School but Effective
Sometimes the best marketing isn’t digital at all.
If you’ve just serviced a home or completed a job, yard signs can be a powerful trust-builder. It’s basically saying, “I helped your neighbor, I can help you too.” That neighborhood credibility is huge.
And if you want to take it a step further, door hangers are another way to expand your reach. Drop a few on the neighbors’ doors around the house you just serviced. It’s hyper-local, it’s inexpensive, and it works.
Pro tip: Make sure your signs and door hangers are branded well — clean, professional, and easy to read at a glance. It’s better to have your website on the sign than your phone number. Even though it may not get calls right away, this is the best way to stay top of mind with people in your community so that when they need your service, you are the first person to pop into their head.
3. Google Local Service Ads: Pay Only for Calls
Now, let’s move into the world of Google.
Google offers something called Local Service Ads (LSAs). Unlike traditional ads, where you pay just to show up, with LSAs you only pay when someone actually calls you.
Yes, the cost per lead is usually higher. But here’s the beauty of it: you’re paying for results, not just visibility. For service-based businesses especially, this can be one of the most efficient ways to generate qualified leads.
If your phone ringing is your main goal, LSAs should be on your radar.
The only thing I don’t like about Google LSAs is that Google only allows certain types of companies to use their platform so make sure you check and see if your industry is supported.
4. Traditional Google Ads: Show Up for Key Search Terms
Next up: the classic Google Ads.
These work a little differently. Instead of paying per call, you pay per click (or even just to appear in front of searchers). The idea is to target specific keywords your potential clients are typing in, like “water softener repair near me” or “septic services in South Bend.”
The challenge here is twofold:
- You pay whether or not someone calls.
- You’re relying on your website to convert that traffic into leads.
That means having strong landing pages, clear calls-to-action, and easy ways for people to contact you is essential. If you’re not confident your website is set up to convert that kind of traffic, my Website Growth & SEO Plans can help you strengthen your site so your ad dollars actually turn into real leads.
Curious about some of our Google Ads results?
Below are some results from August 2025.
Dental Office in town:
- People brought to the website: 228
- Calls to the office: 66
- Cost per click: $2
- Cost per conversion: $9
Wildlife Removal company in town:
- People brought to the website: 853
- Leads generated (calls or emails): 25
- Cost per click: $1.50
What is not listed is how much these two companies spent in ad spend, but it does show you the results! When you’re thinking through the results, you don’t just want to think of the spend, but the ROI. For a dentist, they may have spent $10 per conversion, but they is so tiny in comparison to the lifetime value of a single patient, let along their family!
5. Build Out More Website Pages (SEO Gold!)
Here’s one of my favorite strategies: create more service-specific pages on your website.
Why? Because the more pages you have that match what people are actually searching for, the more likely you are to show up in Google results.
Let’s say you’re a home service business in South Bend. Instead of one generic “Services” page, you might create:
- “Septic Services in South Bend”
- “Water Softener Repair in South Bend”
- “Water Softener Replacement in South Bend”
See the difference? Each of those pages targets a very specific keyword phrase. Over time, Google starts recognizing your site as a relevant result for those searches.
And bonus: once you have these pages built, you can point your Google Ads directly to them. That creates a seamless experience for the searcher and improves your ad performance.
And we can’t forget about ChatGPT and other AI tools (called LLMs). The more content you have on your website, the more ChatGPT is able to suggest you and your services to people who may be using those tools instead of standard search.
6. Push Google Reviews (consistently)
If you take away just one thing from this blog post, let it be this:
Google reviews are your best friend.
When it comes to local search, reviews carry a ton of weight. The more positive reviews you have — and the more recent they are — the more likely you are to show up when someone nearby searches for your service.
It’s not just about the algorithm, either. Think about your own habits: when you’re deciding between two businesses, don’t you almost always check the reviews?
That’s why I tell clients to push reviews hard. Ask every happy customer. Make it easy for them. Text them the link. Remind them. Because a steady stream of good reviews is one of the fastest ways to grow your visibility and credibility.
Grow Your Website Traffic and Leads
So, what’s the best way to get your website found?
There’s no single magic bullet — but a mix of strategies works best. Start with budget-friendly options like Facebook groups and yard signs. Layer in Google’s advertising tools when you’re ready. Keep building out your website with keyword-rich pages. And always, always push for reviews.
When done consistently, these efforts build on each other. You’ll start to see your name pop up more, your calls increase, and your website traffic grow.
And if it still feels overwhelming? That’s exactly what I help my clients with. From building websites that are designed to convert, to crafting smart marketing strategies, I’d love to help you figure out the best next step for your business.
