Website redesign for growing businesses featured image

Obviously, I know everything is not about what you wear but stick with me here for sec.

Do you remember the outfit you wore to your first big networking event? It felt sharp, professional, and just right for that moment. In that outfit, you made connections, landed early clients, and got the ball rolling.

Now imagine showing up today to a $15,000 pitch meeting in that same outfit. Something would feel off. It’s not that the outfit is bad. It’s just not built for where you’re headed.

Your website is the same way.

Many business owners build their first website themselves using a generic template platform. That first site was exactly what you needed at the time. It made you look legitimate. It got clients in the door.

It worked.

But as your business has grown, that same site might be quietly holding you back, and you might not even realize it yet.

Growth does not just change your goals.

It changes what your business needs to support those goals.

Scaling your business means scaling everything that supports it, including your website.

What once felt simple and effective can start to feel limiting because it is no longer built for the level you operate at today.

Let’s take a look at what that early-stage website was really built to do, and where it starts to fall short.

The DIY Website That Got You Started

Most small business websites start the same way. You needed something online fast, so you hopped on Wix, Squarespace, or WordPress, picked a template that looked decent, wrote a few paragraphs about what you do, and hit publish. Maybe you hired a cousin or a friend who “knows websites” to help out. Shoot, maybe you had AI build the website.

Either way, the goal was simple: look professional enough that people would take you seriously.

And it worked.

That scrappy little website helped you land your first clients. It was fast to build, didn’t cost a fortune, and checked the “we have a website” box. For a business just finding its footing, that’s honestly enough.

Full stop. It’s enough.

But as your business grows, your website needs and goals grow too.

That template-based site that once felt perfectly fine starts showing its limits:

  • It was built for speed, not strategy.
  • The design might feel dated or inconsistent with how your brand has evolved.
  • It’s hard to update, hard to scale, and hard to measure.
  • It was built to exist, and it doesn’t actively convert visitors into leads.

There’s no shame in starting there.

But staying there will cost you.

Why ‘Good Enough’ Holds Your Business Back

A website that’s “good enough” is kind of like a leaky bucket. In the early days, you’re filling that bucket so fast that a little water loss doesn’t matter. But once your growth depends on every drop, those leaks become a real problem.

Here’s how an outdated website can create a ceiling on your growth:

Revenue Ceiling: A basic site might be fine for a $100K/year business, but if you’re aiming for $500K or $1M, it won’t handle the traffic, leads, or complexity you need.

Brand Perception: First impressions matter. If your website looks amateur or inconsistent with your growth, you’re sending the wrong message before you even talk to someone.

Conversion Bottlenecks: Basic websites are great as brochures: here’s who we are, here’s what we do, call us at this number. But they’re terrible at converting visitors into leads. There’s no clear path, no intentional flow, and no analytics to show what’s working.

Competitive Edge: Your competitors aren’t standing still. As they invest in professional websites that are optimized, fast, and built to convert, an outdated site next to theirs stands out for the wrong reasons. It makes your business look behind, which can quickly turn into being overlooked.

The Upgrade Mindset: Build a Website That Works

Upgrading your website isn’t just about making it look prettier.

It’s about building something that actively works for your business. A grown-up website should have:

This is the difference between a website that exists and a website that works.

Signs It’s Time to Upgrade Your Website

Not sure if you’ve outgrown your website yet? Here are some honest questions to help you determine whether your website might be holding you back:

  • Is your bounce rate high while your leads stay flat, even though your traffic looks solid?
  • When you compare your site to competitors, does yours feel noticeably outdated or less polished?
  • Do you avoid updating your website because it feels like a hassle every time?
  • Does your site still reflect where your business was in year one, instead of where it is today?
  • Do you have little to no visibility into what’s happening on your site, like who’s visiting, where they’re going, or whether they’re converting?

If a few of those hit close to home, it’s not a knock on you.

It’s useful data, and it gives you a clear starting point.

Real Businesses, Real Results

Let’s look at what this actually looks like in practice by walking through three client examples.

Drake’s Wildlife: Capturing Lost Leads

Jared had been running Drake’s Wildlife for two years with a website that did exactly what it was supposed to do at the time—it got him started. But when Jared came to me wanting to grow reach, it became clear pretty quickly that we had to fix the foundation before we could build anything on top of it.

The site was full of AI-generated content and fluff that didn’t accurately describe services and wasn’t written with the customer in mind. So we rebuilt it from scratch with real, targeted messaging focused on the communities and cities the business actually serves.

One small but mighty change?

We added an exit-intent popup that appears when someone starts to move their browser away, like they’re about to close the tab or hit the back button. It’s a simple thing, but since we introduced it, it’s captured 20+ leads that would have otherwise disappeared. That one popup translates to an estimated $15,000–$30,000 in added revenue.

That’s the power of a website that actually thinks about the customer journey.

And just recently, Jared said that he has brought two more people onto his team (total team of 4) because of the leads and clients that we have brought his way. Talk about an offline win for the business! If you want to talk about how we can do this for your business, click the button below to head over to my contact form.

PHMP: Messaging That Connects

The Proactive Health Management Plan (PHMP) is an add-on benefits plan offered through Key Benefit Administrators, and the old website had a big problem: nobody really understood what it was or why they should care. The messaging basically said “download our app” and called it a day.

We rebuilt the entire strategy, messaging, and copy from the ground up to shift the focus from what the plan is to what life could look like with it. That’s a completely different conversation, and it connects with people on a whole different level.

The site also hosts an extensive blog that’s a core part of the subscriber experience. With a better-designed site, people can actually navigate it, understand the plan, and take meaningful steps toward better health.

In just the last 30 days, nearly 16,000 people visited the website, averaging almost 2 page views per visit.

That’s engagement, and it’s a website doing its job.

Farm Innovators: A Hub for Customers and Sales

Farm Innovators had an old static HTML website that the team couldn’t update on their own. It was essentially frozen in time. And since they don’t sell directly online (their products are in retail stores, on retailer websites, and on Amazon across the U.S. and Canada), they needed a completely different kind of website than you might expect.

What they actually needed was a hub where customers could find user manuals, search for their specific product, troubleshoot issues, and contact the right support team quickly and easily. So that’s what we built. The new site also creates a database of support and warranty contacts, which is huge for the team.

On top of that, the site now doubles as a sales tool.

Their reps can send potential retail partners to the site to browse the product line, see where products are already carried, and submit a request to carry them in-store. The contact forms are set up with smart routing, so depending on what a visitor selects, their message goes directly to the right team member.

Less confusion, faster response, better service.

Your Website Got You Here, But Your Next Level Needs More

The website that helped you launch your business deserves a ton of credit. It did exactly what it needed to do. But if you’re serious about taking your business to the next level, your website needs to grow up with you.

Think of it less like an expense and more like an investment. When done right, it will pay you back in leads, credibility, and growth you can actually measure. The businesses that treat their websites as strategic assets are the ones that don’t hit artificial ceilings. They scale.
