A few years back, my wife and I were on the hunt for a new Christian school for our kids. Just like many parents when they start the search process, we created a checklist of what we want out of a school. Here’s some of the things that we added to the list:
- Christian school
- Within 30 minutes of our home
- Can serve for some of our special needs children
- Comprehensive programs beyond academics and athletics
- Prepares our children for either college or a career
- Well respected reputation in both the Christian and local communities.
Basically, we wanted the unicorn of schools.
So, we did what any self-respecting parents would do: asked friends for recommendations, Googled like our lives depended on it, and scoured school websites.
And you know what?
We found that many schools weren’t putting their best foot forward online with clunky navigation, outdated info, and no clear answers to our many questions.
This experience inspired me, as a website developer, to help Christian schools create websites that truly connect with families and convert online visitors into enrolled students. Since then, I have been able to serve many schools by both building their websites and supporting/maintaining them!
The Parent’s Journey: How Families Choose a School
Let’s break this down, shall we? Here’s the play-by-play of what parents go through when hunting for a school:
- The Lightbulb Moment: Parents recognize the need for a new school. This might be because their child is starting school, they’re dissatisfied with their current school, or they’ve received recommendations from friends.
- The Wishlist: They jot down a list of must-haves (like our unicorn checklist).
- The Great Google Search: Armed with recommendations and a big ol’ cup of coffee, parents hit the internet. They compare schools and dive into websites to determine which schools meet their criteria and are worth the investment.
- The Contact: If they like what they see, parents contact you to schedule a tour or gather additional information. By this point, their impressions of your website will strongly influence their decision.

How to Turn Families Who Visit Your Website Into Enrolled Families
1. Be Prepared to Show Up in Searches
The best way to be discovered online is through your Google Business Profile. It’s like your school’s online handshake. If it’s weak, people notice. Here’s how to make a strong first impression:
- Ask for glowing reviews. Reach out to parents via text, email, or in-person requests.
- Add new photos regularly. Show off your school’s best angles (and no, not the 2003 staff photo). Highlight the facilities and events with recent pictures.
- Update your profile annually. Ensure your school’s description, contact information, and details are current.
Why focus on this? Your Google Business Profile is a free and effective way to appear in local searches—the first step to attracting prospective families.
2. Include the Content Parents Are Looking For
Parents are like detectives. They’ve got questions, and they’re hoping your website has answers. Make sure your website provides information on:
- Academic programs: What you offer and how it compares to other private and public schools.
- Facilities and technology: Modern classrooms, safety measures, and extracurricular spaces.
- Cost and financial aid: Tuition rates, scholarships, and school choice programs.
- Special programs: Support for children with IEPs or special needs.
- Long-term vision: Where do you see your school in 5 or 10 years?
- Enrichment opportunities: Competitive athletics, career prep, and more.
- Accreditation: What it means for students and their futures.
- Parent testimonials: Build trust with real stories from your community.
Supplement this information with photos and videos that bring your school to life.
Why Your Website’s Design Matters
A well-designed website does more than look good—it builds trust and credibility. If your website feels outdated or difficult to navigate, you’re likely losing potential families before they even schedule a tour.
Here’s why design matters:
- 94% of first impressions are design-related.
- 88% of people won’t return to a website after a bad experience.
- 75% of people judge credibility based on website design.
- 40% of visitors leave immediately if a website looks messy or unorganized.
Easy Wins for Your Website
Improving your website doesn’t have to feel overwhelming. Here are some simple, but effective updates you can implement today:
1. Optimize Your Google Business Profile
Parents are searching for schools near them. Make sure your Google Business Profile is up-to-date with:
- Current contact information
- Recent photos of your campus
- Positive parent reviews (ask for these directly via email or text!)
An optimized profile ensures your school is discoverable and leaves a great first impression.
2. Add an FAQ Section To Your Website (and put it in your navigation)
Parents have questions—and lots of them. A well-organized FAQ page can address common inquiries like:
- What academic programs do you offer?
- Do you provide scholarships or financial aid?
- How do you accommodate children with special needs?
Answering these upfront builds trust and saves time for both parents and your staff.
3. Use Authentic Photos and Videos
Parents want to see your school’s real community. Skip the stock photos and showcase:
- Smiling students in classrooms or on the playground
- Engaging extracurricular activities
- Celebrations and events unique to your school
Visual storytelling goes a long way in helping parents picture their child at your school.
4. Make Your Website Mobile-Friendly
Most busy parents are browsing on their phones during lunch breaks, in the carpool line, or late at night in bed. That being said, you want to ensure your site:
- Loads quickly on mobile devices
- Has easy-to-click menus and buttons
- Offers a seamless experience between desktop and mobile
5. Include Clear Call-to-Actions (CTAs) So That Parents Know What Their Next Step Should Be
Every page should guide parents to take the next step. Examples of strong CTAs include:
- “Schedule a Tour Today”
- “Download Our Enrollment Guide”
- “Contact Us for More Information”
Make CTAs easy to spot and action-oriented.

Beyond the Basics: Make Your Website a Conversion Machine
Okay, so you’ve got the fundamentals down. Now let’s take it to the next level:
1. Highlight Your School’s Unique Features
What makes your school special? Showcase programs, extracurriculars, and enrichment opportunities. Have a robotics club? Feature it. Offer dual enrollment for high schoolers? Shout it from the rooftops. Parents love specifics—they want to picture their kid thriving in your environment.
2. Make Contacting Your School Easy and Clear
Don’t make parents dig for your phone number or email. Add clear “Contact Us” buttons and forms on every key page. Pro tip: Include a live chat feature if possible. It’s like having a virtual receptionist ready to answer questions in real time.
3. Create a Virtual Tour
A well-made video walkthrough of your campus can be a game-changer. Show off classrooms, facilities, and student life. It’s the next best thing to an in-person visit, especially for busy parents.
