As an entrepreneur or business owner, you already know the value of a website. When you’re first starting off, it’s one of the first things you’ll put time and effort into when you’re launching your business. As necessary as it is, it can often seem expensive.
If you want to save on costs, you could end up wanting to use a cheap website designer, and it’s relatively easy to see why; however, that doesn’t mean it’s the best thing to do. While you’ll save on money now, compared to hiring a more expensive option, it could cost you more money in the long-term. While that’s surprising to hear, it happens in more than a few ways.
Though you can still hire a cheap website designer, it’s worth knowing what you could be losing out on if you do. The costs could end up being more than you’d think.
Why You May Consider Hiring a Cheap Website Designer
While it’s not recommended you hire a cheap website designer, it’s understandable to see why you’d consider it. It offers quite a few perceived benefits, and there are multiple reasons why you’d want to try it.
The most notable of these is it’ll save you some money. That can be more than appealing if you’re conscious about your finances. If you’re on a tight budget, it can also be relatively understandable to consider it.
Then there are the multiple other reasons why you’d consider it:
- Social Media Drives Your Sales – Quite a few e-commerce businesses make most of their money through social media. So much so, they don’t feel a need for a website. While this is an effective strategy for the short-term, it isn’t for the long-term. With a high-quality website, you make your sales more adaptable to changing trends. Plus, you are in full control of your sales, instead of fully relying on a third-party platform.
- You Think You’ve Got A Bargain – Countless people fall for marketing claims and deals all the time. While this works out well sometimes, it doesn’t work out well when it comes to websites. If a company boasts creating amazing websites at basement prices, they’re more than likely exaggerating. Don’t always believe a company’s claims. Look into them first. If it seems too good to be true, it probably is.
- You Don’t Think It’s THAT Important – You might not be completely sold on the benefits a website offers, and you could be setting one up out of a sense of obligation. That could lead to you feeling like you shouldn’t spend too much money on it. You’ll want to keep it as cheap as possible, leading to you choosing a cheap website designer.
While many of these can be relatively understandable, that still doesn’t mean hiring a cheap website designer is the best option. It’ll save you a bit of money now, but it could end up costing you much more in the long-term.
If you hire a cheap website designer, you’ll need to be aware of these ideas and thoughts, but they also act as great reasons why you should work with a potentially more expensive option . . . especially if that option has a proven track record.
For the record, I’m not saying that there is zero place for DIY or budget-friendly website design. I mean, that’s how I first got started – designing a website for my small church. However, if you are wanting to solve expensive problems with a cheap solution, you’re basically putting a bandaid on something that needs surgery.
Let’s take a look at six of the more notable costs of hiring a cheap website designer.
6 Potential Issues That Can Happen If You Hire A Cheap Website Designer
1. Miss Out on Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
Your website should be used to support many of your marketing campaigns and strategies — it’s a core asset for many of these. For it to actually work well, however, it needs to be visible on search engines. That’s where search engine optimization (SEO) comes in.
SEO the practice of optimizing your website to rank well on Google and various other search engines. While content plays a large role in this, so does your website structure and other technical areas, such as schema markup. Fun fact, even your design plays a significant role in SEO! Because if people come to your website and hate what they see, they will leave your website and go to your competitor’s website instead. This affects your bounce rate.

Your website designer naturally needs to keep SEO in mind when creating your website. When you go with a cheap website designer, however, that might not happen. A solid website designer on the other hand will make sure that the basic SEO protocols are in place. They could even recommend professionals for creating SEO-friendly content and other areas.

2. Not Implementing a Pipeline
Sales and marketing pipelines (also called sales funnels) are vital for a company to see success. These require an extensive amount of thought and planning to work correctly. Once you have your pipeline, you can implement various ways to encourage potential customers along these pipelines.
Generally, your website reaches people at the top of your funnel, and you need to make sure that your website guides people through the whole process of liking you to trusting you to doing business with you.
Your website is one of the more notable assets to use when you’re trying to turn cold leads into engaged customers, and when your website is built correctly, it helps drive sales and ultimately, grows your business.
A cheap website designer usually doesn’t plan for this. Instead, they’ll focus on getting it made quickly and getting paid. It wouldn’t support your pipelines nearly as much as it should. Not only will you miss out on visibility, but conversions and sales, costing you money.
3. Non-Scalable Website Design and Backend
Many cheap website designers have processes in place to make websites as quickly as possible. One of the more notable of these is using templates. With templates, designers just need to make a few adjustments, put your content into the slots, and call it a day. There’s not much actual website creation done.
These templates are designed to be quick and easy, and scalability is never thought of because that’s not the goal. If your business were to scale up, your website might not be able to keep up! This could have noticeable consequences.
When designing websites, the biggest “non-scalable” issue I’ve found comes with integrations to make your customer experience better. Whether it’s adding your CRM, putting in a membership platform, creating an e-commerce portion, or selling event tickets, you are usually locked in to the platform you’re using, which can cause you to need a whole new website redesign. You want a website that can grow with you, not be stuck while your business grows.
4. Low-Quality Puts Off Potential Customers
When you hire a cheap website designer, you’re more than likely to get a low-quality website (sure, it’s not often the case, but it happens more than you think!). This will be because these designers haven’t put much time and effort into making sure the website serves your business for the long haul. They want to get it done and out of the way so they can move on to the next project. Because of that, they’re not dedicated to creating quality websites.
Your potential customers will notice this low-quality, which can be quite off-putting, and they might decide not to buy from you because of it. Though this isn’t an actual expense, it does mean you’ll make much less money.
Your profit levels will be strained because of that, and it might play a role in you not making a profit in the first place. With a high-quality website, you’ll be much more likely to get these sales. You’ll see more leads and conversions compared to a low-quality, cheap website.
5. It Doesn’t Differentiate You From Your Competition
Your website is supposed to help differentiate you from your competitors. It should show potential customers why they should buy from you and only you. At the same time, the website needs to grab and keep the visitor’s attention. With cheap websites, that usually isn’t possible.
Instead, your website could end up looking relatively boring and cookie-cutter. Best case scenario? It will look almost IDENTICAL to countless other websites in your industry. There’ll be nothing setting you apart from your competition.
There’ll be nothing to draw in a potential customers’ attention, never mind convert them to paying customers. This costs you sales, and you could lose out on much more than you’d assume. While this isn’t something you’ll outright pay for, it does stop you from making money.
6. You May End Up Needing to Redo Your Entire Website . . . Again
At a certain point, you could realize your website isn’t actively doing anything for you. You’ll see that a cheap website is a drain on your resources that could be actively harming your company – that’s when you’ll decide to actually do something about it.
You’ll have to redo your website so that it’s actually high-quality and high-performing, and all of this comes at quite a decent cost. The original fee you paid a cheap website designer would’ve been for nothing, and now, you paid twice for the same website.
Costs of Hiring a Cheap Website Designer: Wrapping Up
I want to be honest and say that there are many times where it’s totally kosher to hire a cheap website designer. For example, you might have a tight budget and not be able to afford better, or you could just want to save some money. By now, I hope you realize that doesn’t exactly mean it’s the best option, though.
It could lead to you losing out on more money both now and in the future, and it could end up costing you more than you’d think.
You’ll miss out on potential business opportunities and lose out on sales because of it. Then there’s the fact it might actually hurt all of your marketing efforts, which is the main reason you have a website in the first place.
It isn’t worth it to hire a cheap website designer. You’re much better off investing in your website now. Do it the right way, the first time.
